Entire Career of Earnings Inadequate for UK Employees to Join Richest 10%, Report Says

Per new analysis, the median earner in the UK would have to work half a century of earnings to attain the wealth level of the wealthiest 10% nationwide.

Expanding Economic Disparity Through the Years

This research reviewed financial assets data from the recent health crisis years and discovered that in the mid-2000s, it would have needed nearly four decades of median full-time earnings to enter the top 10th of the economic ladder.

A research lead part of the study commented: "Wealth gaps in Britain are currently so significant that a average worker accumulating their complete salary across their entire working life would remain unable to attain the highest level of the wealth ladder."

Assessing the Financial Disparity

The research revealed that the disparity between the assets of the typical individual and a person belonging to the richest segment was £1 million in 2006-08, but had widened to 1.3 million pounds in actual value by recent times.

The analyst added: "These disparities are doubly concerning as economic movement in Britain is low – individuals who begin life well-off tend to continue being rich, and the opposite holds true."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Even with the economic divide expanding in actual numbers, the portion of overall assets in the UK owned by the richest households – called "comparative financial divide" – has been "largely unchanged since the 1980s," per the research.

Over this timeframe, total wealth in the UK surged from thrice the annual GDP, to almost 7.5 times.

Drivers of Economic Disparity

So-called "automatic" gains, by means of growing real estate costs and adjustments to retirement fund assessments, were the key contributors of the growing financial disparity from 2010 onward, as stated in the report.

These increases generally flowed to older, property-owning households, the study demonstrates – intensifying the age-based economic gap.

Intergenerational Economic Gaps

The typical financial disparity between thirty-somethings and sixty-somethings grew by more than 100% in inflation-adjusted terms, from £135k in the mid-2000s, to £310k.

Geographic Disparities

Additionally, there were pronounced regional variations, with the average level of assets in recent years reaching 290 thousand pounds in the SE of England, where property prices have tended to rise rapidly, compared with £110,000 in the northeastern region.

Pandemic Period Consequences

Amid the health crisis, when numerous employees were covered under the taxpayer-backed furlough scheme, and health crisis restrictions reduced expenditure possibilities, the information reveals many households were capable of accumulating, increasing their wealth.

Higher-income households achieved superior outcomes, though. "The average household in the poorest fifth saw their available funds grow by only eighty pounds throughout the health crisis (across the pandemic timeframe), broadly the same as the pre-crisis period. Conversely, the average household in the wealthiest fifth saw their cash reserves rise by £4,200," the study reveals.
