The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. During this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe starting at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population, is split among 27 different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: skilled workforce, excellent education systems, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
